Preparing for Your Kindred Pup
Bringing home a dachshund is an exciting and meaningful moment. With a little preparation, you’ll create a calm, confident start for both you and your puppy.

Below you’ll find our essential checklist and recommendations to help make the transition smooth and joyful.
The Kindred Checklist
A simple guide to help you prepare your home for your dachshund puppy.
Crates
& Safe Spaces
We strongly recommend crate training from day one.
A crate provides your puppy with structure, security, and a quiet place to rest.

For miniature dachshunds, we recommend a 24” wire crate with a divider.
Avoid oversized crates — puppies feel safer in cozy spaces.
Schedule Your
Veterinarian Visit
Your puppy should see your veterinarian within 72 hours of pickup.
This ensures a smooth transition and activates your health guarantee.

We’ll provide all medical records at pickup.
Puppy
Nutrition
We will send you home with the food your puppy is currently eating.
We recommend keeping the same food for at least 1–2 weeks before transitioning.

Dachshunds can have sensitive stomachs, so slow transitions are important.
Consider
Pet Insurance
Dachshunds are bold and adventurous.
Insurance gives peace of mind in case of unexpected vet visits.

We recommend researching options before pickup so you’re ready from day one.
House Preparation Essentials
Small dogs need safe, structured environments.
Exercise Pens
Great for creating a puppy zone and teaching boundaries.
Bowls
Two stainless steel bowls — one for food, one for water.
Leash & Collar
A 4–6 ft leash and a lightweight flat collar.
Avoid retractable leashes at first — dachshunds need structured walking habits.
Puppy Pads
Helpful during early potty training and car rides home.
  • Mental Stimulation
    Dachshunds are intelligent and curious.
Interactive toys, snuffle mats, and durable chew toys are highly recommended.

Avoid soft plush toys that can be easily destroyed.
