About the breed
Meet the Miniature Dachshund
Introduction
Miniature Dachshunds are intelligent, loyal, and full of personality.
Originally bred for hunting, they are brave, curious, and sometimes delightfully stubborn.

Despite their small size, they carry themselves with confidence and surprising boldness. A dachshund may be compact in body — but never in spirit.
  • History & Purpose
The Dachshund originated in Germany over 300 years ago.
Their name literally means “badger dog.”

They were selectively bred to hunt burrowing animals, which explains:

    • Their elongated body
    • Strong front legs
    • Determined temperament

This working heritage still lives within them today.
  • Temperament
    Miniature Dachshunds are:

    • Deeply devoted to their people
    • Alert and observant
    • Intelligent and quick learners
    • Independent thinkers

They form strong bonds and often choose one “favorite person,” though they love the entire family.

Consistency and gentle leadership are essential.
  • Is a Dachshund Right for You?
    Dachshunds thrive in homes where:

    • Owners understand long-term commitment
    • Training is consistent
    • Mental stimulation is provided
    • Structure and affection go hand in hand

They do not do well in chaotic environments or with inconsistent boundaries.
  • Miniature Dachshunds come in three coat types:
    • Smooth
    • Longhaired
    • Wirehaired

Each requires slightly different grooming routines.

Longhaired varieties need regular brushing to prevent matting.
All coat types benefit from nail trimming and dental care.
  • Back Health & Safety
Because of their long backs, dachshunds are prone to spinal issues if not properly managed.

    We strongly recommend:

    • Preventing jumping off furniture
    • Using ramps when possible
    • Maintaining a healthy weight

Protecting their spine is one of the most important responsibilities of ownership.
