Hi, I am Lexa Mitsel. Kindred Dachshunds brings together the beginning of my journey with dogs and decades of experience since. When I was a teen, I was given a tiny, red-shaded, smooth-coated miniature dachshund puppy named Iriska. During a challenging period of my life, she was a constant, gentle presence, brightening my days with her sweet personality. Not long after, my family immigrated to New York City, where I fell in love with poodles and spent more than twenty years devoted to the breed.
Several years ago, I was reintroduced to a long-coated miniature dachshund, and from the very first encounter, I was smitten; it felt like reconnecting with an old friend and coming home at the same time. What I love the most about miniature dachshunds is their ability to be both deeply connected, sweet companions and highly confident little dogs with big hearts. They are affectionate, loyal, underfoot, and yet independent. Dachshunds come in a variety of beautiful, fun colors too.
The decades of breeding experience and the establishment of a well-regarded poodle program laid the foundation for my approach and refined my core principles, which I now apply to miniature dachshund breeding.
Our philosophy
The Kindred program is guided by the belief that a well-bred miniature dachshund should be both physically sound and adapted for life as a family companion. Every decision we make is shaped by four core principles.
Health and Structure
We prioritize sound health and correct structure through thoughtful pairings and responsible breeding practices, supporting dogs built for longevity and quality of life.
Temperament
We value sweet and steady temperaments. My goal is to produce dachshunds who are affectionate, confident, and well-suited to life as devoted companions to the whole family.
Upbringing
The puppies are raised in my home on early socialisation based in gentle handling and early experiences that support emotional resilience and ease in the human world.
Careful Match
Each puppy is placed with intention. I take time to thoughtfully match puppies with their families based on temperament fit and remain a source of support throughout the dog's life.
Believe that you can, and you're halfway there
Whatever your goals, believe in them with all your heart
